Mercer’s Survey:  Employee engagement is becoming a key concern.

With the improving economy and job market, concern about engaging employees and retaining critical talent is top of mind for many employers.

According to Mercer’s 2012 Attraction and Retention Survey, more than 40% of participating organizations are expanding their overall workforce in 2012 compared to just 27% in 2010. Moreover, fewer organizations today than two years ago are making selected reductions to their workforce (16% versus 25%, respectively), Yet despite this positive news, almost twice as many organizations today are reporting reduced levels of employee engagement compared to two years ago (24% versus 13%, respectively).

“Employee loyalty has been eroding the past few years due to companies’ responses to the economic downturn,” said Loree Griffith, Principal with Mercer’s Rewards consulting business in the US. “Actions like layoffs, pay freezes and limited training opportunities have created an evolving employment deal for employees due to uncertainty about what is expected and how employees will be rewarded. Meanwhile, firms are still aggressively managing people costs while finding ways to re-energize and re-motivate engaged employees.”

Mercer’s 2012 Attraction and Retention Survey examines the challenges, strategies and tactics organizations are using to promote employee attraction, retention and engagement. It includes responses from more than 470 employers across all industries throughout the US and Canada.

Our New Store Window

During the mid to late 19th century Pioneers made the hazardous journey to the West, taking with them all their worldly goods and sometimes the whole family and associated relations. The most common mode of travel was by wagon train, these convoys consisted of groups of covered wagons and a whole community travelling together for the common good of all, to help and assist with each other’s passage to California.

Along with the settlers were the people seeking commerce – Barbers – Merchants selling pots and pans, Carpenters and the like, who could be identified either by a scrawled cryptic sign on the wagon canvas, or indeed by a display of the items for sale hanging from the sides of the wagon.

On reaching the final destination, these people of commercial enterprise found more permanent homes for their wares in the towns that sprang up around the settler’s final locations. Normally without competition these old fashioned “Stores” were identified by the service they provided – Livery Stable – Feed and Grain – Barber – Saloon – General Store – Undertaker.

It’s still just Steak & Fries…

I recently gave a presentation to my Americas team on the subject of encouraging them all to “Think Differently”. We covered the whole aspect of the financial collapse around the world and how if USA businesses and the economy were to recover in both the long term and short term then they had to use different tools and business methodology, stating that America or business could not solve its problems with the same thinking it used when they created them.

Communication – When enough is just right.

The amount of communications we receive every hour of every day has been on a steady increase over the last few years, and that, combined with the way we receive these communications leaves a bewildering number of messages and images that is difficult for the human brain to assimilate. From subliminal marketing and product placement in movies to thinly veiled advertisements in social media, the bombardment continues at an unrelenting pace.

Reach for the Stars

A few years ago I attended a conference in Monte Carlo, and on the final morning of my stay decided to enjoy my last breakfast croissant and coffee on the terrace overlooking the beach with views to the sea beyond. As I gazed out to sea I noticed below me a very well dressed beach attendant arrive for work, he acknowledged me with a smile and mock salute and went about his daily work of dressing the beach area for that days expected tourists and sun worshipers. He sang as he worked (Very much like Gondolier) and began to rake the sand this way and that in a very meticulous manner , moving rocks to a designated place and design and raking the sand in what only can be described as  Zen like motions.

The Micawber Principle

There cannot be many people who have not been affected by the economic crisis both foreign and domestic. From banks collapsing to falling interest rates and mortgage foreclosures, business closure and rising prices, the outlook has been grim for a considerable length of time with some even speculating on a double dip recession. The latest round of events resulted in the United States losing its top-tier AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor’s  in an unprecedented blow to the world’s largest economy in the wake of a political battle that took the country to the brink of default. The move reflected the impression of a deterioration in the global economic standing of the United States, which has had a AAA credit rating from S&P since 1941.

DC and Marvel what an “Incentive”!

I spent the formative years of my life in a small county town on the edge of the “Lake District” in the North of England; the area is very much like a mini Switzerland with its mountains and lakes but without the “Gnomes “of Zurich and expensive vacation destinations.

Very insular in its location “Foreign News” and information to a young boy seemed very far away and very exotic, and so it stayed until my tenth birthday when a cousin who had just returned from his travels in the merchant navy presented me with some Marvel and DC American “Superhero” comics.

What would Shakespeare have said?

There are circa 540,000 words in the English language which is around Five times more than in Shakespeare’s time.

I recently had occasion to take my car in for service, a task that normally takes only a few hours and one for which I patiently wait for while the work is completed, but on this occasion it was going to take a couple of days so arranged a loaner vehicle with the garage to cover this time.
